Transmission malfunctions are sometimes hard to pin down and might even go unnoticed. A transmission slip can manifest itself in a lot of different ways because there’s not a universal or consistent way to describe it. Since it will vary based on the vehicle, how bad the issue is, and what components are at fault, here are some symptoms to look for in your vehicle.

Failure to Engage - Failure to engage in drive or reverse is often one of the first indicators that your car’s transmission is having problems. You might notice when you shift out of park and into gear, it takes a moment for the transmission to engage. You might even have to hit the throttle for a second before it kicks into gear and starts moving. Typically, the issue is more noticeable when the vehicle is cold or when you start it for the first time that day. It may only happen once a day or only on occasion at first.

Shifting to High - You might notice your vehicle's engine revs higher than usual, and the truck feels like there’s a loss of power before the transmission finally shifts into the next gear. This can be the result of an internal issue, but could just as likely be a sensor or a cable out of adjustment - an easy fix, but a damaging issue. If you don’t get it corrected, it’ll ruin your truck’s transmission.

Slipping In/Out - Sometimes, a car’s slipping transmission will phase in and out of gear. It’ll feel like you have less power, and the engine will rev higher before the transmission regains its hold and fully engages again. This can happen at any time. most commonly while you’re accelerating or climbing a hill, but also while you’re trying to hold a constant speed. It may not fully disengage and might be barely even noticeable. No matter how bad it is, have it professionally diagnosed and serviced immediately. At Gossett Automotive in Gatesville, TX, the service technicians will be glad to help you.

These are the most common symptoms but not the only ones. Any erratic transmission behavior is a cause for concern though, and it will ruin your car’s transmission if not corrected.
